The "Economy of Francis and Clare" is the most recent Chair of the Portuguese Catholic University, announced by the Rector, Isabel Capeloa Gil, during the visit of Pope Francis to the UCP, on August 3, as part of World Youth Day 2023.
In a tribute to the Holy Father, the Rector explains how the project aims to "host transversal initiatives in all areas of knowledge of the UCP, aimed at promoting the principles of Francis' Economy and developing a social model that dignifies people and the environment".
An initiative that His Holiness praised during his speech, praising Clara's inclusion, and underlining how "the feminine contribution is indispensable. In fact, in the Bible, we see how the economy of the family is largely in the hands of women."
For Pope Francis, the woman is "the true 'ruler' of the home, whose goal is not exclusively profit, but care, coexistence, the physical and spiritual well-being of all, and also the ability to share with the poor and the stranger."
As such, she believes that it is "exciting to undertake economic studies from this perspective, with the intention of restoring to the economy the dignity it deserves, so that it does not remain in the hands of the wild market and speculation".
