President and CEO of Amyris visits Alchemy project team

John Melo CEO Amyris

As part of the Alchemy research project, the president and CEO of Amyris was in the new Biotechnology Building, to know the researchers, understand how the project is taking place and meet with members who are part of Amyris Portugal and who are based in this new building.

In order to contribute to the optimization of the efficiency of the biomolecule production process and investigate new applications for by-products/waste resulting from this process, thus enhancing the development of new molecules of high commercial interest, in particular for the food, cosmetic, industrial and pharmaceutical industries, the Alchemy project results from a strategic partnership between the Portuguese Catholic University, through the Higher School of Biotechnology (ESB), the company Amyris Bio Products Portugal, a subsidiary of Amyris, Inc., and the Government of Portugal, through the Agency for Investment and Foreign Trade of Portugal (AICEP). At the same time, the project aims to promote the transfer of technology that will translate into a growth in the competitiveness of companies in the area of bioeconomy.

Currently, the project involves about 100 researchers between the two entities, of which 60 represent new hires, adding several skills, namely bioengineering, microbiology and bioanalytical. The project, whose first phase lasts five years, materializes in a center of skills of excellence in biotechnology, promoting Portugal at the forefront in the areas of bioeconomy and circular economy.
