Human Rights and Artificial Intelligence: Global Thought Leaders at Católica’s 60th Anniversary

ucp

As part of the celebrations for the 60th Anniversary of Universidade Católica Portuguesa, the Conversations with Global Thought Leaders series hosts a critical discussion on ethics, technology, and human dignity.

The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence raises defining questions for the future of society, fundamental rights, and human values in the digital era. Taking advantage of the presence of two leading international voices in Lisbon, the President of Universidade Católica Portuguesa invites our academic community, partners, and supporters to an in-depth conversation on the ethical frontier of AI.

The dialogue brings together:

  • H. E. Msgr. Paul Desmond Tighe, Secretary of the Dicastery for Culture and Education of the Holy See, who has been at the forefront of the Holy See’s engagement with technological leaders in Silicon Valley and ethical reflection on AI—a central theme of Pope Leo XIV's encyclical Magnifica Humanitas.

  • Michael O'Flaherty, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, widely recognized for his advocacy and leadership in human rights protection across Europe and internationally.

This session embodies Católica’s enduring commitment to humanistic leadership, ethical reflection, and shaping global conversations for the common good.
