The Rector of the Portuguese Catholic University, Isabel Capeloa Gil, was a keynote speaker at the 28th Assembly of the Association of Southeast and Asian Catholic Colleges and Universities (ASEACCU), which took place in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, from the 23 to the 27 of August 2022.
Under the theme "Memory and Identity", the conference brought together about 200 Catholic universities from Southeast Asia and was hosted by St. Paul Institute, the only Catholic university in the country.
Isabel Capeloa Gil dedicated her intervention to the theme "Memory and Human dignity". The conference program also included a visit to the killing fields - places where more than one million people were tortured, killed and buried, victims of persecution by the Khmer Rouge during the 70s, and a meeting with survivors of this period.
There were also lectures on Cambodia's cultural identity, religious practices, and historical and political memory, among other topics.
The Association of Southeast and East Asian Catholic Colleges and Universities is a regional association of Catholic universities whose goal is to promote Catholic higher education and contribute to educational dialogue at the international level.
