The Rector of Católica, Isabel Capeloa Gil, has been honored with the Career Consecration Award at the 38th edition of the Dona Antónia Awards. Established in 1988 by Sogrape, these awards are dedicated to honoring Portuguese women who stand out for their exceptional career paths, talent, and meaningful contributions toward a more just, inclusive, and qualified society.
The jury, chaired by António Lobo Xavier, described the Rector of Católica as an "indispensable reference in Portuguese public life," highlighting her outstanding academic, scientific, and institutional achievements. The panel emphasized her steadfast defense of education, culture, and critical thinking as vital engines for societal growth, naming her "one of the most influential figures in higher education in Portugal," with a leadership path highly respected both at home and abroad.
Under her stewardship, Católica has successfully driven a strategic process of internationalization and academic innovation. These advancements have been crucial in positioning Católica among the most prestigious universities in Europe. This milestone reinforces the university's ongoing pursuit of educational excellence, driven by the dedication of its faculty, researchers, and the vital philanthropic support of the Give to Católica community.
"Dona Antónia’s legacy continues to open doors for many young women today. Never stop believing that it is possible. Believe that you possess the necessary skills, and when opportunities arise, embrace them. If they do not appear, create them. The most important factor for a successful future is self-confidence," stated Isabel Capeloa Gil, sharing an inspiring message for future leaders.
By receiving this award, the Rector joins an exclusive circle of "Ferreirinha" women. The accolade celebrates the values, vision, and transformative spirit of Antónia Adelaide Ferreira (born in 1811), the legendary businesswoman who assumed control of her family's wine enterprise at the age of 33, reshaping the history of the Douro region and Port wine production through entrepreneurial courage and social responsibility.
